When Christopher Eccleston left Doctor Who after just one series, the BBC released a statement saying the actor decided to leave because he feared he was being 'typecast'.

But now the Salford-born actor has revealed the real reason he left the show ? because he hated the ?politics? on set and suggested there was bullying by senior staff members.

The actor, 47, made the telling remarks while he was giving an acting masterclass at London?s Theatre Royal on Wednesday.

Shock revelations: Christopher Eccleston has said the reason he left Doctor Who after just one series was because he didn't get on with senior members of staff and because of bullying

He told the group: ?I left Doctor Who because I could not get along with the senior people. I didn?t agree with the way things were being run.?

He added: ?I thought to remain, which would have made me a lot of money and given me huge visibility, the price I would have had to pay was to eat a lot of sh*t.?

?It?s easy to find a job when you?ve got no morals. You can go, ?Yeah, yeah. That doesn?t matter. That director can bully that prop man and I won?t say anything about it?.?

The acclaimed actor, who has starred in films 28 Days Later and Gone in 60 seconds said he didn?t get on with the senior staff.

He said: ?I left because of politics. I did not see eye-to-eye with them.

?I didn't agree with the way things were being run.

?I didn't like the culture that had grown up around the series. So I left over a principle.?

But despite the problems he experienced on set Christopher, who was recently acclaimed for his role as John Lennon in BBC drama Lennon Naked, said is still proud of his time as the Doctor.

The role of Doctor Who in 2005 was a brief departure from the conflicted souls the actor usually plays, but he left after one series being replaced with David Tennant.

Who actress to make theatre debut

Doctor Who actress Karen Gillan is to make her professional theatre debut in a West End revival of John Osborne's 1964 play Inadmissible Evidence.

Hodge plays a self-destructive lawyer, while Gillan will play his secretary.

The 23-year-old Scot will be seen later this year playing model Jean Shrimpton in BBC Four film We'll Take Manhattan.

The play - opening at the Comedy Theatre in October - will see the 38-year-old play a former political prisoner who kidnaps a man she believes raped and tortured her.

Newton appeared with Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible II and won a Bafta in 2006 for her work in Crash.

Juliet Stevenson appeared in the original 1991 production of the play, while Sigourney Weaver starred in Roman Polanski's 1994 film.

Sara Cox apologies over 'daft' Twitter rant after offending deaf community

Angry reaction: Sara Cox said use of subtitles was 'daft'

BBC radio DJ Sara Cox has upset the deaf after complaining about having to sit through a subtitled film at the cinema.

The Radio 1 presenter provoked anger by saying on her Twitter page that the use of the subtitles, which were in English, was ?daft?.

But Miss Cox, best-known for promoting the ?ladette? culture among young women in the 1990s, was forced to apologise after her comments were described as ?shocking? and ?disgusting?.

A film executive said English-language subtitles are fast becoming ?standard practice? in cinemas to help customers who have hearing problems. Many advertise their use in local listings, but some filmgoers are entering cinemas unaware that the facility is being used.

It was at a showing of the Hollywood comedy Bridesmaids at her local cinema that 36-year-old Miss Cox, who lives in North London, made her controversial comments.

Using her mobile phone, she wrote on her Twitter page: ?How daft is this? I?m on a date at the flicks and Bridesmaids is gonna have English subtitles.?

She then added: ?I morphed momentarily into my dad and asked if we got any money off cos of the subtitles.

?If I was wearing my specs I could have just put a thin strip of black gaffer tape across the bottom of the lenses to block out the subtitles.?

A number of her followers on Twitter immediately began joking based on her comments.

Miss Cox initially defended herself from those who said she should have checked the listings before going to the cinema, saying: ?We checked online & it didn?t mention it.?

One of her followers then wrote: ?Get some respect and realise how lucky you are to HEAR!?

Apologetic: The DJ apologised for the comments and deleted the posts from her page. Seen here at the F1 party earlier this monthApologetic: The DJ apologised for the comments and deleted the posts from her page. Seen here at the F1 party earlier this month

And another wrote: ?More shocking was her followers? ignorant response and jokes, jumping on her bandwagon, some mocking and making fun. We?re not second-rate citizens.?

Fellow tweeter Matthew Shaw said: ?You?ve royally p***** off hundreds of deaf people.?

Following the outcry, she then deleted the offending comments before delivering an apology to her 285,000 followers on the social networking site.

In hot water: Sara Cox has apologised after complaining to Twitter that she had to sit through a film with subtitles, sparking outrage form the deaf communityIn hot water: Sara Cox has apologised after complaining to Twitter that she had to sit through a film with subtitles, sparking outrage form the deaf community

She wrote: ?Crikey, come out of cinema to lots of severe tellings off from very cross people. Sorry my random musings might sometimes not be thought thru.?

It is not the first time she has attracted controversy. As well as helping to kickstart the rise of the ladette culture, alongside her friend Zoe Ball, in the 1990s, in August 2000 she said during a live Radio 1 broadcast that the Queen Mother ?smelt of wee?.  Despite her remark she managed to escape being sacked by the BBC.

Emma Harrison, of Action on Hearing Loss, said: ?Many of the ten million people with hearing loss in the UK rely on subtitles to follow films and this provision is vital in making the cinema experience accessible to everyone.?

Mark Batey, chief executive of the Film Distribution Association, said that older films traditionally shown on 35mm reels required the subtitles to be ?burnt? on to the celluloid, a laborious and expensive procedure. He added: ?Now that most cinemas use digital technology to screen movies, it is far easier to add subtitles. Film distribution companies now provide the subtitles as normal practice. Then, it is up to the individual cinemas whether they want to add the subtitles or not, depending on local audience demand.?

He said that some cinemas are located in areas with a large population of people who have hearing impairments, while they may also decide to show a subtitled film at certain times of the day and not at others.

The girls showed off their trim legs and glowing tans in light denim hot pants with the Irish singer teaming her shorts with a black T-shirt and a pair of UGG boots.

Mollie, who has recently started dating D&G model Davd Gandy wore a pretty floral top by Lipsy, a light denim jacket and finished off her look with a pair of T-bar sandals and sunglasses.

Beginners:

By Chris Tookey

Last updated at 1:40 AM on 22nd July 2011

Beginners (15)

Verdict: Too cute by three-quarters

Rating: 2 Star Rating

Writer-director Mike Mills made a likeable cult comedy in Thumbsucker (2005).

His second venture, Beginners, is a backward step: decently acted but so uneventful and underpowered that it will stretch the patience of mainstream audiences.

It?s almost worth watching for a modestly charming performance by Ewan McGregor as a youngish man perplexed but sympathetic when his father (Christopher Plummer, equally impressive) comes out as gay at the age of 75.

Beginners: Ewan McGregor with Christopher Plummer, who plays his father, who reveals his homosexuality on his 75th birthday

Beginners: Ewan McGregor with Christopher Plummer, who plays his father, who reveals his homosexuality on his 75th birthday

But Mills doesn?t delve deep into character, and his movie takes such care to be non-judgmental that it strays into preciousness.

Plummer?s gayness manifests itself in a liking for colourful cravats and a forced joviality around other homosexuals.

You?d never guess that sexual impulses are involved; in this movie, it?s a deliciously quirky lifestyle choice, roughly equivalent to taking up bowling in silk pyjamas.

Good start but hard to follow is the verdict on Beginners

Good start but hard to follow is the verdict on Beginners

The film is even less daring as a gut-wrenchingly twee romance develops between McGregor?s sadness-obsessed cartoonist and a depressingly personality-free French actress (Melanie Laurent).

As that relationship fizzles, so does the movie as a whole. It turns into a bland, self-pitying bore ? coy and creepily self-absorbed.

I can imagine this finding an appreciative fringe audience at the Sundance Film Festival, where being non-judgmental and liberal has taken the place of religious belief, but as a commercial prospect its prospects are ? let?s try to be polite and non-judgmental about this ? extremely limited.
